Different Scrapbooking Tools You Need

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Scrapbooking can be a very challenging task for the beginner. For one thing, you need creativity in order to create a beautiful work of art. You also need to think up a distinct theme which forms the backbone of the scrapbook. The items you put inside the scrapbook should also be arranged in such a manner that their significance is unmistakable. With all these complexities, many people would be hard-pressed to complete a scrapbook without the proper tools.

So what tools would you actually need to put a scrapbook together?

1) Scissors ? Everyone knows what scissors are, right? Well, here is a metaphor for the scissors in scrapbooking. Scissors are like bringers of order. Scissors shape the little bits of paper into forms that you can use in your scrapbook. This scrapbooking tool is very important in making pieces fit together. Some people may refuse to cut the pieces of paper, but only through this, can the scrapbook be completed.

In that sense, a pair of scissors can symbolize the truth. Why, you ask? Well, the truth hurts. But it has to hurt, doesn?t it? It has to hurt if it is to set you free.

There are two distinctive types of scissors you can use as scrapbooking tools:

a) Conventional paper-cutting scissors ? These scissors are made to cut and to cut straight. This is the type of scissors people encounter from the very beginning of their childhood. You need to be able to trust your scissors to cut straight, because it just looks ugly if you unintentionally use dull scissors and mess up the cut of the paper.

b) Crafting scissors ? This type of scissors can be bought at different art supply shops. These scissors are distinctively shaped in order to produce different types of cuts. Using this scrapbooking tool can be a whole lot more convenient than trying to follow a pattern using straight-cutting scissors. You see, using conventional scissors can give you carpal tunnel because of the stress your fingers will be taking. And that?s not good at all, is it?

2) Puncher ? This nifty scrapbooking tool is used mainly to punch holes into paper. There are, once again, two types of punchers available out there:

a) Conventional ? This type of puncher produces round holes. Funnily enough, this type of puncher was not designed as a scrapbooking tool, but as an office supply. For those of today?s generation, files are known as the thing you keep documents in your computer. However, for other people, files consist of important papers and documents which are organized together. Punchers were used to put holes into those documents in order to accommodate a fastener.

However, punchers are now used today to make perfect circles on scrapbooking pages.
b) Shaped ? This type of puncher, pretty much works in the same manner as the conventional puncher. However, the edges of the punching mechanism take different shapes in order to accommodate your crafting needs. This scrapbooking tool is used to make different shaped holes in the pages of the scrapbook.

3) Tweezers ? Tweezers are often used as scrapbooking tools in order to enable the crafter to put in a design or to glue in a bit of paper neatly. You see, when making a scrapbook, you will be working with different materials together with a lot of glue. Because of this, there is a high risk of you smudging the different pictures of the scrapbook. Tweezers are excellent scrapbooking tools to maintain the cleanliness of your handiwork.

4) Computer ? This can be an excellent scrapbooking tool because of the fact that it can do a variety of things. On the computer, you can do research on what scrapbooking theme to use. This means you are given more resources on the varieties of different themes and the ways you can incorporate them in your scrapbook. You can also use the computer to get more images to put in your scrapbook. By using the computer, you get all the advantage of modern technology and can therefore, make your scrapbook into anything you like.

Scrapbooking tools allow people to have an easier time crafting their handiwork. However, you should remember that sometimes. Mistakes actually make a scrapbook more personal. Mistakes show the human side of you. Like the memories you show on a scrapbook, the making of it should not necessarily be perfect, but it should be fun.

Free Scrapbooking Tips: How to Create Scrapbook Page

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Here?s your situation: You are done shopping for your scrapbook supplies. You have collected all photos you need for your scrapbook. Everything is prepared; the album, pair of scissors, adhesive, embellishments, papers, pens, and many more. But you are staring blankly on this pile of things thinking what should you do and how to make this work according the outcome you want to achieve.

The thing is, you don?t have to put too much burden on yourself trying to come up with a magnificent work of art. All you have to do is to get everything organized and let your imagination take over.

For some help, here are the steps on how to create a scrapbook page:

Draw up a page-by-page plan. Yeah right! Do can?t even start a page. Well, to be honest, the best way to have a good scrapbook page is not about making a plan. It is about creating freely. So, scrap the idea of making a page-by-page plan unless you have a good sense of imagining things. But if you don?t, well, you might start by organizing your photos according to the theme you want to achieve.

Let us say that again in another way: ORGANIZE.

As was mentioned, organize your photos according to the theme. You may not use every photo you have prepared. Just select the best and those you think would be great once combined with other scrapbook supplies you will use.

Group the photos that would fit to one page. You may use variations on each page. For example, you will place 5 photos in one page. Then on the next page, you will use just 4. Chronological arrangements will keep things easy for you.

Can you see where we are going here? Yes, after you have organized your photos, you found yourself with a page-by-page plan. We just make the term easy for you.

Now, let us work on one page…

With the photos you have grouped, take 2-3 colors of papers that would compliment them. Select a background that would enhance the image of your selected photos. If you don?t have a background, create one that would let the photos stand out. You can use the internet to get some ideas for a great background. There are also printable backgrounds you can download. If you prefer making one on your own, use the tip above.

Make decorations on the page together with the photos. Select one photo that would become the focal point of the page. Spread other photos on the page. Decorations come on the sides of the photos. Do not use adhesives yet so that you can change the arrangements and the decorations if you need to. Glue them if you have finally decided on the look of the page.

Also, use borders to highlight the photos. Double or triple matting would make a good border. Shape the photos according to your desired outcome. Shapes such as squares, circles, rectangles, and ovals are more pleasing and more common. Do not over flood the page. If you think you have overly decorated the page, do not hesitate to remove some decorations.

Create journaling. Expressing your thoughts, experiences, and feelings would bring out better expression on the page. Take time to write some information about the page?s content.

Pay close attention to the details and elements such as balance symmetry, and scare. Observe how your eyes move in Z direction as you stare at the page. If you think there are changes you need to make, do not hesitate to do it before you glue them permanently.

After you finish doing this, you have already made a page on your scrapbook. Do the same process on the succeeding pages. Try to use different variations. Make each page unique from another. Try other colors. Use different arrangements. Make different styles.

Add more embellishments as you go along. Use stickers, die cuts, and rubber stamps. If you find that there is a need to add or change embellishments on some of the pages you have already made, do them carefully so as you don?t destroy the existing decorations. Good luck!

Free Scrapbooking Layouts for All Types of Scrapbooks

One of the hardest challenges you have to encounter when you are making any type of scrapbook is creating different layouts one after another. Yes, you simply run out of ideas on how to make each page unique and the tendency is, as you add more pages, you develop a certain arrangement of pattern layouts. And this of course makes your scrapbook boring and predictable.

To ensure you avoid scrapbook monotony from happening, here are several scrapbook layout ideas you may want to add on your existing ideas on your mind.

? Work on the background

There are thousands of backgrounds you can use as a layout. All you have to do is pick one. But in the event that you are working on few backgrounds, then it is time for you to improvise. Remove some details and add something different.

? Work on the design

If you are working on one background for your entire scrapbook, the best way to make each page different from another is by working on the design. Normally, a scrapbook page would include a photo(s), text, letter cut outs, and embellishments. You can rearrange all these to create a new and unique page. You can also use varieties of embellishments on each page. Use every part of the page. This means, you can always decide where to place important things on each page. For example, on the first page, the picture is located at the middle. Then on second, you can bring the photo on the upper left corner of the page. Then on the next, you can the other side of the page? and so forth.

? Start with a blank

The best way to create a unique page is to start with nothing and work your way from there. A blank page would certainly open endless possibilities for design. And these endless possibilities would come up different every time you start working on it.

? Use color combination

Colors can be used to enhance the image of the scrapbook while using them in different ways would create an entirely different page. Use different color combination to make each page stand out.

? Use different arrangements

One each page of the scrapbook, make sure you arrange all the elements differently. Ask yourself: where to place the pictures; where to put the captions; what color should I use; what shape would work best; and what materials can be used?? These questions will lead you to anticipation every time you lift the pages.

? Use events

Take advantage of the events you want to highlight. For example, the page you will work on is for the birthday celebration or a summer outing. Use materials that are relation to these events. For birthday celebration, you may want to add the inflated balloons or invitation together with the photos. For summer outings, you may want to glue some sands and things found at the beach or resort you went. The thing is, if you are making a page for a certain event, there are always enough ways to highlight them by using materials related to them.

? Get inspiration

If you want to get inspiration, you may want to consult the things around you. The flowers and plants at the garden, the houses around your neighborhood, the trees at your backyard, the sun setting at the horizon, the lake near you, the sights you have seen while you travel, and so forth. These things will surely give you enough inspiration to create and finish unique scrapbook layouts.

If these things do not work, there is another way? search for layouts on the internet.

There are thousands of scrapbook layouts on the internet that you can adapt. Look for certain theme that would work best in your imagination and expand from there.

The internet can offer several types of scrapbook templates you can also adapt. These templates are printable but you can always make a version of your own, using the materials you have.

Each scrapbook is different and so as its pages. Using your imagination, creativity and all these mentioned above will give you page after page variety.

Scrapbooking for Less: Tips and Tricks

If you want to start your own scrapbook but do not have an open budget to buy some essential supplies, then this article is for you. You will learn how to find ways to get around your limited budget but still create beautiful scrapbook you can be proud of.

There are 3 types of scrapbooking stores: (1) stores that sell branded scrapbook supplies on regular price (2) stores that sell discounted scrapbook supplies; and (3) stores that sell both.

As long as you have the money to buy some supplies, then you can go in any of the 3. But since you need to do some careful shopping from a limited budget, you can only go to the second and the third.

But, don?t go anywhere yet, you still have things to do.

First, you need to know the things you need and set your priority- materials? hierarchy of needs.

An album is the most essential supply you must have. Next would be the album refill. Pens, papers, adhesive, and pair of scissors are the things you can have. Rubber stamps, acrylic paints, puncher, stickers, card stock, and other minor detailing you can live without are still essential.

Second. As yourself, from these items, what are the things you already have. Knowing this would let you eliminate things you can skip buying. For example; you already have a good pair of scissors at home. Or you already have some colored papers from your previous artwork. Or you have some colored pens. All of these will let you save enough money to buy other stuff you do not hove.

Third, make a list. Now that you have identified the things you need and the things you need to have. Make a list of the things you want to buy. Remember that you are working on a limited budget here so you should know what are your priorities. It is better if you make two lists. One is for the must haves and the second is for the extra supplies if you still have excess money.

Forth, check the price on the internet. This is the quickest way to do it. There are several sites that sell different scrapbooking supplies. And there are more sites that offer discounted scrapbooking supplies. You may want to visit sites that offer cheaper but nice supplies. Check on the prices here. Do not forget to shop around. The first site you visit may not be the best so take some time to browse on several sites before deciding where to buy your supplies.

Fifth, create a final list. If you have already decided where to buy your supplies, then, it is time for you to make your final list. It may seem unimportant since you have seen the prices and have realized that your budget would fit. But the fact is, making a final list would get you organized. Your final list will be your guide to your shopping. And oh! Make sure you write down the prices beside your each item so that you know how much you are spending on the particular supply.

After you have done all these, it is time for you to shop. You can shop online. It is more convenient and less stressful. If you prefer seeing the product first before paying for it, then, you can go to stores.

If you still have some extra cash left, you may want to buy some inexpensive scrapbook supplies that would give extra glow on your scrapbook. Some brands of rub-ons, stamps, colored pens, and colored papers could cost as low as $3.

But if you are really on a tight budget, you may want to improvise. Use materials you can find at your home. Magazines, newspapers, and other papers, can be good alternatives for colored papers and paints. Try to improvise on materials you will use. After all, what is important is to create a unique scrapbook. Yes, expensive materials would really give some good effects on your scrapbook, but with a little creativity and imagination, any material you have at home would transform your scrapbook into a work of art you can call your own.

Have a happy and wonderful scrapbook making!

Digital Scrapbooking: Is it for you?

The digital artwork is making its way into the mainstream; so as the digital scrapbook. For sure, we have certain understanding about digital art, but what about digital scrapbook? Is it the same with digital art?

The two are both similar and different in many ways but we are not here to discuss deeply their differences and similarities. We are here to focus on the digital scrapbooking as an alternative to the traditional scrapbook making.

Traditional scrapbooks are make by hand with several materials such as papers, pens, letter cut outs, adhesives, and other embellishments you can think of. The main principle is; to create a wonderfully decorated page that would give better meaning on the message you want to address. Digital scrapbooking works on the same principle too. You create unique page with decorations to enhance the meaning of the massage you want to address.

What sets the two apart is the method of achieving this principle. As mentioned, traditional scrapbooking uses material such as papers, pens, letter cut outs, adhesives, and other embellishments. Digital scrapbooking on the other hand uses computer graphics that replaces these traditional materials. You may say it is harder to work on the page design on the computer than on the actual page (traditional scrapbook). But, to be honest, it is almost the same.

Take the following for example:

The traditional scrapbook will work on a background or layout (sometimes called a template), pictures, texts, and embellishments. The process goes like this: you place the pictures on the background, place some embellishments of your type, and write some texts.

The digital scrapbook will work on software with all the available digital embellishments and texts. You have scanned pictures to be placed on a chosen background. Put some texts and add more design. Then, with some more editing on the colors and borders, you have created a scrapbook page.

(Speaking of software. There are several software that would let you create digital scrapbooks. These are Microsoft? Digital Image Pro, Photoshop? Elements or Adobe? Photoshop?, Ulead PhotoImpact?, or Jasc Paint Shop Pro?, to name a few.)

Oftentimes, it is much easier to create a digital scrapbook than a traditional one. This is because software that lets you create digital scrapbook with ready to use templates for texts and backgrounds, not to mention the editing tools you need. These features make it easier to create one unique page. Downloadable templates are readily available over the internet to widen up your choices on text, embellishments, and background. This is unlike traditional scrapbook that every thing is yours to make; from the background to the cutting of the decoration.

To further illustrate how does a digital page is created, here are the steps to follow:

? Create a new image from a blank canvas

? Define the size of the page you will use.

? Enter the settings you want to adapt.

? Add the photo

Photos determine the color scheme of the layout, therefore, you may want to see first what picture will you going to use before determining the mat of the canvas.

To add a photo, you must first save one on a file. You can either scan pictures or take them from your digital cameras.

? Create the background

Now that you have a determined canvas and photo, it is time for you to select your background. Here, the choices are endless. You can download images from the internet or use your photos to be the background itself. You can edit the texture of the background to match the theme you want to achieve.

? Create the photo mat

Photo mats let the background and the photo meet on a certain point.

? Add the text and embellishments

Ready made texts and embellishments are one good feature of digital scrapbooking software. This helps you to put important touches fast and easy.

? Apply some finishing touches

Final editing is as important as placing everything in order. Make use of built in features such as shadows, emboss, effects, and others. This would help your page look more attractive as it highlights whatever you want to be highlighted.

How to Choose the Perfect Quotes for Scrapbooking

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Many people are taking interest in Scrapbooking. Scrapbooking is a simple activity that most people love to engage in because it involves creation. We all love to do something with our hands. Scrapbooking is an activity that is simple enough to be done by everyone and can show immediate and wonderful results.

You see, people engage in Scrapbooking because we love to reminisce. Scrapbooks help people think about different events, which had significant impacts in their lives. You see, no matter how intelligent a person can claim to be, nobody can remember completely all the events in their lives.

In Scrapbooking, you collect objects or pictures that allow you to remember the different events. These objects or pictures touch you in a way that no diary can. These pictures and objects allow you to re-experience the moment of your history.

Many people say that a picture is worth a thousand words. However, dealing with memories can be a very difficult experience. Memories get clouded, and pictures can sometimes be interpreted in a thousand different ways. However, writing down your memories of an event can be quite boring and it takes the thrill of mystery from rediscovering your history.

So what is a good compromise between writing a diary and making a very vague scrapbook? Most people choose to find scrapbooking quotes in order to help them get the initial feel of a memory. Scrapbooking quotes give you the general idea of a memory, but let you fill in the blanks yourself. By making use of scrapbooking quotes, you actually have the advantage of touching hearts. Using the combination of photos, memorabilia, and scrapbooking quotes can prove to be a most effective way of initializing a good reminiscing session.

However, in order to have this effect, you’ll need to choose your Scrapbooking quotes properly. So what qualities should you look for in a scrapbooking quote?

1. Mnemonic quality – a good scrapbooking quote should be easily remembered. It should have that quality that makes it stick to your head. By having this quality, you can be sure of at least one impact of the scrapbooking quote.

You realize, of course, that the best songs often have this quality. Ever wonder why some singers fade away after 2 albums while some old singers still remain popular even decades after their last song was released? You see, the mnemonic quality of a phrase helps people associate it easily with certain things.

2. Relevant – Of course, a scrapbooking quote should be relevant to what you intend to portray. The scrapbooking quote should be able to bring across your message and enable whoever is reading the quote to relate to the object or picture in your scrapbook.

The scrapbooking quote may come off as trivial to the reader. However, the meaning of the scrapbooking quote should not be so vague that the reader has to use all of his or her brainpower to understand it. That is, unless you intend for the scrapbook to take on an air of mystery and clue-finding.

3. Short – A scrapbooking quote should be able to get the message across with very few words. You see, the focus of the scrapbook should remain on the objects or photographs. In choosing a scrapbooking quote, you should make sure that the quote does not take the center stage from the other objects in the scrapbook. However, you should make sure that the quote is just enough to form a bridge of thought between the words and the objects.

4. Touching – a good scrapbooking quote should not only touch your brain, but it should also move your emotion. You see, scrapbooks trigger memories not for the purpose of giving your brain a workout, but to enrich your soul. Thinking about past events, whether delightful or forlorn, helps you rediscover yourself and what made you the person you are today.

These are just some qualities that you should look for in a scrapbooking quote. Never forget, however, that the most important factor is you. You should decide whether or not a quote is appropriate for your scrapbook. This is the reason why some people choose to write their own quotes instead of borrowing the words of another. A scrapbook is a very personal item, which needs to relate to you.
